Nvidia has transitioned its strategy from merely supplying hardware to offering a full-stack, cloud-based AI foundry service, directly targeting enterprise clients with its new DGX Cloud. Announced in partnership with Oracle, with Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud integrations to follow, this move positions Nvidia to capture recurring revenue from AI software and infrastructure services. This fundamentally alters the competitive landscape, shifting Nvidia from a component supplier for cloud providers to a direct competitor, a strategic evolution echoing Apple’s control over both its hardware and software ecosystems to maximize value and defensibility. This "Foundry-as-a-Service" model creates an asymmetric advantage by bundling best-in-class hardware (H100 GPUs) with a powerful software layer (Nvidia AI Enterprise), a combination rivals cannot easily replicate. For enterprise clients, DGX Cloud offers a streamlined path to deploying complex AI models without the prohibitive capital expenditure of owning the hardware.
